You really have to hand it to Daryl Hannah. She’s been a major force in the environmental movement for a long time. Not content with passing eco-airs and graces, this girl really knows what’s she’s talking about and definitely practices what she preaches. She was even arrested a couple of years ago for her part in a 23 day tree sit in a bid to save an L.A. urban community garden.
But this article isn’t about her dalliances with the boys in blue or the fact that she drives a biodiesel car to and from her solar powered home (complete with organic garden, no less), it’s about the absolutely fabulous webiste that Daryl has - dh love life.
What I love about this site is how it delivers the goods. It covers all the bases, but not in a boring way. It truly aims to inform people of the a wide variety of issues.
For example - I found the following information on the site and it’s really quite horrifying to me as a mother of 4 who has now realised that I have poisoned my kids for the last 11 years!
Horror of Horrors:
- Blueberries are little balls of pesticides if not organic!
- Peaches are listed as the worst of all conventional produce with the highest levels of pesticides
- Strawberries - don’t even go there
- Bananas - oh my God. These buggers are liberally dosed with heavy chemicals for the trip to the US, including something called Thiabendazole (I lost the plot after the 9th letter) which apparently DAMAGES THE BRAIN & NERVOUS SYSTEM. Right on - so remember all that mashed banana you gave junior in the early days? Unfortunately, I do….
The list goes on…. The only smart thing to do is run for your lives and buy local, organic produce to avoid killing your children, and yourself in the process.
(On that note, I HAVE actually been growing my own fruit and veg, but I have to say that I’m rather bad at it. I have sweet corn that looks sort of done, but I’m not sure whether to pick it or not - I’m waiting to see if the cobs get any bigger….or maybe they’ll simply wilt and die of boredom. Then there are my strawberry plants that have yielded, oh…..about 3 strawberries (but very nice ones though) and we mustn’t forget the apricot tree that just decided to drop 7,000 apricots all at once and now has me running around the kitchen in a blind panic).
The site also details the areas where things did make a difference - which is fabulous. I’m not sure about you but I regularly feel powerless to carry out the changes we have to make to put all this right and so a little bit of good news is always a breath of fresh air
Daryl uses video a lot throughout the site, which is great for the increasing number of people these days who only have 5 nano-seconds to spare. Check out the fabulous ‘Show‘ section. It’s really awesome.

Finally, she has a great eco-shopping area. Now this isn’t your usual limp interweb affiliate offerings that are the norm these days, these are green products that have been tried, tested and used by the DH team on a regular basis. They range from everyday essentials, kids and pets, home and body and, my personal favourite - Fantasy Playthings.
OK so the name sort of implied something else - but once I’d clicked on it I was impressed to find some really cool items, including a tipi (yes, haven’t been in one of those for a while!) and my favourite - the hemp electric guitar. OK - so it’s a bit pricey, but what a concept. I’d love to know how it sounds when playing host to a face-melting solo…maybe one day I’ll get to find out
