in the category of wtf… an ad campaign like no other

In this time of negative campaigning, it’s refreshing to see a positive ad for a negative product. But seriously, folks, do the members of the Corn Refiners Association (CFA) think Americans are THIS stupid?

Apparently they do. Here’s another one if you need more convincing that high fructose corn syrup is great.

Well, there you go. Everything in moderation. Is it only a matter of time before we see ad supporting trans fat, Aspartame, MSG and the like? They can just rip off the incredibly clever and though-provoking ads from the CFA:

Sheila: “Hey, Joel! Did you just come out of that restaurant that sells food with trans fats?”

Joel, munching on some french fries: “I sure did, Sheila. Why?”

Sheila, looking appalled: “Haven’t you heard the awful things they say about trans fats?”

Joel: “Like what?”

Sheila stammers: “Uhhh, I dunno.”

Joel: “What? You mean like they’re delicious, made from plant oils and are just fine in moderation? Yeah, I heard that, too!”

Knowing such a brilliant, convincing statement must be right, an embarrassed Sheila looks at him and takes a fry.

The good thing about this is that the CRA MUST be feeling the pressure in order to invest in a primetime national ad campaign. I LOVE that!

It’s appropriate timing that I rented the documentary King Corn last weekend from Blockbuster. It was eye opening to learn about today’s corn farming and how much it has changed in the last 30 years ago. They did a nice job of allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions – showing the dilemma of the farmers and the fact that it’s done this way because this is what Corporate America (and theoretically us peons) are asking for. If you haven’t seen it yet, go rent it. I didn’t find it depressing, I found it eye opening.

You can put lipstick on a cob, but it’s still liquified, refined sugar…. Kinda like the crack of sweetners: cheap, widely available, and guaranteed to make you smile for 5 minutes.
