super-charge your Sundays with superfoods

September 19th, 2008 by lorraine ·

I’m not sure what it is about Sundays, but it’s often the day when I take stock of my eating habits and crave the ‘new me’ that will eat healthier and run more miles a week. So, with that said, I often nip down to my local Wholefoods or Trader Joes in search of the ‘good stuff’. You know, that magic organic thing that adds 20 years to your life while making you 10lbs lighter. Well, needless to say, I haven’t found THAT yet, but here are some fabulous superfoods that you may want to check out next time you’re wandering aimlessly through the fruit and veg section in search of nirvana:

The Ariona Berry
This black fruit contains high levels of antioxidants, protecting against heart disease and cancer and improving brain function (what was I saying, again?). Check out these recipes and let us know what you think!

Broccoli
So just 5 portions of this baby a week and you can switch off genes that trigger prostate cancer. For women, it puts hairs on your chest (or that’s what my Mum always used to say when I was a kid).
Sex up your broccoli by pairing it with stilton in this fab soup!

Spinach
The plant that my Mum once mistook for ‘mold’ when first confronted with it can boost muscle growth and help combat eye disease, gum problems and anaemia. Oh, and it also acts against cancer and heart problems. It’s such a fab creation that it even has it’s own cookbook devoted completely to it!

Green Tea
Yummy! The great thing about this little powerhouse is that it contains polyphenols that help eliminate the free radicals that speed up the ageing process. Oh, and don’t think that green tea is just a foofoo drink at Starbucks - check out this site dedicated to green tea!

Tomatoes
So, when cooked they have been found to increase the skin’s protection against sunburn. I bet you didn’t know that! Try this next time you look at your sorry tomatoes sitting in the fridge!

Blueberries
These babies contain an antioxidant which zaps the free radicals caused by smoking, pollution and sunlight that cause wrinkles. Check out this site for more info and also a bunch of tasty things to try out!

Ain’t Mother Nature bloody great?
