today’s special: cantaloupe

September 2nd, 2008 by kristen · no comments

As summer draws to a close, I tip my hat to a quintessential summertime fruit, the cantaloupe. Growing up in Maryland, there were four foods I looked forward to each summer: steamed Maryland blue crabs, juicy, red tomatoes, silver queen white corn and just-off-the-vine cantaloupe from the local farmers. In my opinion, there’s no better summertime meal than those four perfect foods.

Living in Los Angeles we’re lucky to have so many wonderful fruits and vegetables that are fresh, available and organic(!) throughout the year, but I have to say that I have yet to find a West Coast tomato, ear of corn or slice of cantaloupe that comes close to those in Maryland in the summer. Perhaps the liquid air that is Maryland humidity DOES come in handy for something!

In honor of the cantaloupe (aka: muskmelon), I’ve tracked down a few tasty products that I thought might help keep summer in your life a little longer:

Natural Selections has a Zen Silk Herbal Lip Balm that comes in cantaloupe flavor. It’s only $4.95 and is made with shea and cocoa butters as well as a lovely blend of herbs like chamomile, comfrey and rosemary extract. Try it at night before you sleep for sweet dreams and silky lips in the morning.

For a silky body that matches your cantaloupy lips, Winks & Company has created a creamy cantaloupe and cucumber body butter. At $10 for 2.3 oz., this paraben-free body butter’s silkiness is a result of the beautiful blend of shea butter, pomegranate oil, apricot kernal oil, coconut milk, Vitamin E and silk proteins.

Oliba’s Sweet Cantaloupe Soap smells like a fresh cantaloupe and is vegan to boot! The cantaloupe extracts and essential oils make it a great antioxidant as well as a moisturizer. Find a 6 oz. bar at Etsy for only $4.50.

And once you’re feeling and smelling delicious, slip into Gypsy’s 05’s gorgeous organic long dress in cantaloupe for $128. The organic cotton in this dress is colored with natural dyes and continues its eco-friendliness by being produced in a solar-powered factory.

All the rage in Hollywood, Gypsy 05’s dress has been seen on the likes of Hayden Panettiere (shown) Christina Aguilera, Denise Richards and Lauren Conrad. But who are we kidding? You’re going to rock this look like nobody before you.

To cap off the look, show your true (green) colors by wearing VertUpcycling’s cool $4 cantaloupe seed upcycled bracelet.

Feel free to enter comments below and tell me any flavors of products you want me to look into next!
