Since I learned that every piece of plastic ever created will never die and just fill up our landfills and oceans and choke the life out of the planet, I cannot stand the thought of adding to the mix. For example, when we’re out to dinner as a family and the left-overs are then presented to us in Styrofoam containers, I’m screaming inside. I tell you, this eco thing has really got to me…and it’s a good thing.
So, thank heavens above for biodegradable and compostable plastics. As long as these items are exposed to sunlight, moisture, bacteria and enzymes then they decompose rapidly and in a way that doesn’t take so much of a toll on our planet.
Take a look at the following websites (you could even get up to 25% off at checkout!)…
Here are a selection of plastic alternatives you may want to try in the kitchen, garden and around the home:
EcoProduct’s compostable bowls and plates are made from the stalk of sugarcane, a fabulously renewable resource, which is ground up and made into paper pulp for sturdy and planet-friendly eating ware. Check out this great website letsgogreen.biz – and, as an extra bonus, rumour has it that you’ll get a 25% discount if you use “friend” at checkout!
Natural Value’s EcoSafe kitchen garbage bags are engineered to provide the service and performance or an ordinary plastic bag, but will disintegrate within 2 years (yes, ‘years’ BUT at least they give in eventually!) They are also PVC and plasticizer-free which makes them more eco-friendly. Head on over to the fabulous dirtworks.net and take a browse at their great green products!
BioBag features an assortment of compostable plastic-like bags made from Mater-Bi (a material derived from the corn starch). Bags include kitchen and green waste bags to dog poop bags and cat box liners.
Having a barbie or get together? The SpudWare brand of utensils are a good alternative to use for on-the-go meals and parties. Made from GMO-free potato starch, these biodegradable pieces have a shelf-life of five years, are microwave, dishwasher safe and reusable. Stock up at treecycle.com!
So, when you’re next in need of plastic bags, cups, plates, spoons, etc – don’t buy the evil landfill variety, please search out and stock up on the eco-friendly versions!

Another great source is World-Centric, http://www.worldcentric.org/biocompostables. They’re a local company, based in San Mateo & a warehouse in Fremont. You can buy compostable cups, bowls, utensils, etc. in bulk. I’ve been ordering their products for my office.
