from sex toy to playground mulch….

I love Rolling Stone magazine. I love the commentary, the writing style – it’s just a really great publication. Anyway, while as I was flicking through RS waiting for my sons to finish their rock band rehearsal at the local haunt, I  came across a little article that caught my eye. Sex Toys – yep, you heard me. Those gadgets (…”of which we shall not speak“…) that are destined to end up forever in a landfill (along with the brown paper bag that covers them)!

So – I was more than a little interested to read about a company called Dreamscapes.

Dreamscapes is a company “committed to creating political, legal, and social environment in the United States that advances equal rights of consenting adults who practice any and all forms of sexual expression. The founder, set out to make all of Dreamscapes websites a friendly, “clean, well lit” alternative to conventional “adult” online retailers. The principles on which they were founded are openness, honesty, community service and sharing of educational resources.”

They made a company-wide “Commitment to Green” and became the first business in the adult industry to receive its Green Certification by the IGBC. They understand the importance of being environmentally conscious and their “Commitment to Green” initiative include the following:

  • Energy efficient lighting
  • All cardboard is reused or baled for recycling
  • All packing material that received is reused
  • Office paper shredded for recycling
  • Companywide battery recycling
  • Regular contact with manufacturers to encourage production of more eco friendly packaging and products

The thing that caught my eye, however was their Sex Toy Recycling Program.

So – how does it work?

  1. It is Simple and Easy
Simply drop your clean used toy(s) in the mail. When they receive it in their warehouse they will have it cleaned and disassembled. The rubber, silicone, hard plastics, metal, e-waste and motors will be sent to recycling facilities that process the materials for reuse. Did you leave the batteries in? Don’t worry, they will dispose of them responsibly, too.
  2. Help Your Planet
You can feel good that you have done one more thing to cut consumer waste, reduce landfills and help eliminate the toxic chemicals that seep into our soil and ground water.
  3. Be Rewarded For Your Good Deed
Not only do they make recycling your sex toys simple, they also offer a reward as an incentive. For every package of toys you send in to be recycled, you will receive a $10 gift card to use at one of their affiliate partners.

They say that “Going green has never been this much fun” and, I have to agree that you can’t say fairer than that!
