I’d like to tell you about something I discovered in my Spanish class last week. It’s about a tiny little creature called the Coquí.
The Coquí is a very small Puerto Rican frog, but never judge a book by its cover. These little guys create around 100 decibels of sound – as much as an electric guitar! Just imagine, miles and miles of Coquí – a symphony of sound in your neighborhood!

There are 16 species of Coquí, and 13 of these live in Yunque National Park. This rainforest covers 28,000 acres and is the only rainforest in the US National Forest System. It also average s 240 inches of rain a year. The coqui are at home here and they come out at night and start to make their unique sound.
They got their name from the song they sing, “Co-quí. and the music they make can be heard from all over the island.

Their voice is not the only amazing fact about them. Even more unbelievable is the reproductive process. This frog bypasses the tadpole stage completely. The female, lays approximately 28 eggs and the male then looks after them. They then emerge as fully grown frogs.
Some people, even Puerto Ricans themselves, believe that the coquí only come in green. However, the truth is that Coquís can have many colors: brown, grey, yellow, blue, green, blue, orange, and gold.

The Puerto Rican national symbol is a Coquí, and their song is truly a wonder. Thanks to the wonder of youtube, you no longer have hop on a plane to hear them – just take a listen…
